Beginner’s Guide to Collecting Antiques

Collecting antiques is a hobby enjoyed by many. Starting your collection can be very intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. If you are considering a new hobby or are interested in adding a touch of history to your space, follow these four tips to get started.

  1. Learn how antiques value. An antique’s value can be based on several different components. Rarity, condition, age, quality, and provenance are all factors that influence the price of a piece.
  2. Learn to spot a fake. Just because a piece looks antique doesn’t mean it is. Many people will try to reproduce an antique and still charge the big bucks for it. Check to see if it bears a mark of modern manufacturing and be conscious of how new a piece looks.
  3. Understand what antiques not to collect. There are a few antiques out there that are illegal to buy or sell. Don’t purchase items such as ivory, eagle feathers, and native artifacts.
  4. It doesn’t have to be expensive. Many people believe that collecting antiques is an expensive hobby, but it doesn’t have to be. You can find many different items below five dollars. Start small and learn as you go.
