Should You Shop New or Vintage?

Furnishing your home can be overwhelming. There are so many options, and it is easy to get caught up in the home trends. The truth is, furnishing your home should be about personal taste and preference. Don’t get caught up in the pressure of buying new things to stay trendy, go vintage!

There are many advantages to furnishing your home with vintage goods. I’m sure you have heard the saying, ‘they don’t make them like they used to.’ That saying applies to antiques! The quality of antique furniture is generally higher than most modern pieces. Older furnishings were typically handmade and more durable. If a table has lasted fifty years, it must be a good piece.

Antiques are also green! Antique shopping is a highlight of eco-friendly shopping. Antiques are inherently recycled and reused. Very few products can claim the longevity that many antiques can claim. Vintage pieces often don’t require new resources or energy. New furniture requires tons of energy and resources to make, contributing to pollution and waste. Antiques rarely go out of style and provide personality in your space. While an antique may not be on-trend at the time, it is rare that they ever become completely un-trendy. Antiques are unique, which contributes to why you don’t see them at the top of every trend list, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t stylish. Having a unique piece also adds character to your space. You have an item that most people won’t, making it a staple in your home.

Shopping new can be exciting and make you feel on top of the charts, but what is new eventually becomes old. Antiques hold quality and style that never goes completely out of style. Next time you are picking pieces to furnish your home, consider going antique.
